It"s no surprise this was an era of instability due to new and strange ideas and practices. This fragmentation and instability connected italy to northern europe. Local italian rulers always had to contend with the rulers of france, aragon, and the. Pockets of renaissance humanism emerged in northern europe. Especially in the low countries as can be seen in the figure of erasmus of rotterdam. Erasmus would become one of luther"s most important and hated interlocutors: humanism and christianity. Many humanists applied their training to christian teachings.
