Document Summary

Reign of henry iv and henry v: henry of bolingbroke, is the rightful heir to the duchy of lancaster, the development of new constitutional ideas of england. Parliament could only call itself into existence by the monarch"s pleasure. Parliament can"t exist to name henry king, without a king calling that parliament into existence: henry decided he could claim the throne of england by his bloodline and conquest of defeating and capturing richard. In order to become king, he needed richard to abdicate his throne. It was said richard gracefully abdicated to become a knight and continue his life. Having done this, parliament acknowledged henry as the rightful king of england. It was a complete coup d" tat, and there was no peaceful abdication. He died 5 months later by suspicious causes, which helped henry consolidate his hold on the throne. When richard was prisoner in a castle, henry made sure all of his advisors were removed.
