Assembly of notables, estates-general, and french monarchy: assembly of notables: 144 picked influential members of upper society. Suspicion calonne was sending bills after 3 year spending free. Things worked out in the end with people willing to pay land tax. Calonne is responsible for the mess and should be dismissed: demanded the estates-general to be convened. 90% of the population is 1/3 of the vote in the third estates of estates-general. Royal council wanted to avoid convening the estates-general. Parlements began resisting and magistrates were arrested and exiled: day of tiles: in grenoble. People climbed on roofs and tore off tiles and threw it at the militias. Soldiers and magistrates fled worried about the mob. New generation of activists: barnave: a lawyer who among others inspired the crowd with new sets of political demands. Instead of the 1/3 representation, the clergy and nobility have 1/4 while commoners have.
