HIST-209 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Puritans, Absolute Monarchy, High Church
Document Summary
Charles i: charles i: 1625 - 1646. Charles got off to a bad start with parliament to the throne because early on he promised no relief to catholics. Involved in a political, dynastic marriage and negotiations with him and the king of france to form an alliance and marry henrietta. Promised the king of france that his bride and her household would be free to practice. Catholicism and that they wouldn"t be persecuted anymore. Puritans were upset by this and charles had immediate problems with parliament because of his marriage. Charles himself was quiet, reserved, lacked self confidence and had a stammer. Disliked making hard decisions, dealing with hard problems, and liked straight-forward choices and when he couldn"t get them, he would delay, etc. Very inflexible on principles but confused petty matters with the principle of respect for the monarchy. Gave way with bad grace and believed any criticism was a personal attack on him and his rights on monarch.
