Document Summary

Cultural aspects of the renaissance: people are interested in the printing of religious works but also poetry/literature. Printing more works helps standardizing languages: wealthy merchants have the disposable income to be patrons of art and science. Different rulers could be interested in being patrons of certain things. A new brand of philosophy that isn"t directly tied to religious doctrine emerges: a slow recovery of classical culture, art, literature, poetry, scholarship, etc. and first began with practical works. Medieval scholasticism: emphasis on using aristotle"s deductive logic as an aid in formulating theology. Towards the end of the medieval period, a rediscovery of plato and plotinus. The byzantine empire was in decline and owned some ancient greek works. Medici family: one of the wealthiest/most influential families in italy who wanted to discuss ancient philosophies. Platonism had an important affect because it gives humanism. Humanism is about the search for individual perfection: gave the concept of the "universal man".
