Is rarely a sudden event; the process takes place in several stages. One or both individuals come to realize that something is wrong with their marriage. Followed by what john gottman calls the divorce cascade (like going over a waterfall) First there is increasing conflict, then serious consideration of divorce, then separation, and finally divorce. The further along a couple are in this sequence, the harder it is to avoid divorce. Start becoming involved in activities outside of the home a kind of emotional withdrawal from the family. Other family members start realizing that something is wrong ad that the marriage cannot be saved: 2. ) The couple must plan the breakup of the family. They need to work cooperatively to settle issues such as the custody of children, visitation rights and finances. Often, the planning process does not go smoothly. All family members tend to be under a great deal of stress.
