ANTH-110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Premarital Sex, Thicket, Malala Yousafzai
Document Summary
Parts of pakistan have male supremacy particularly entrenched. Women"s lives there are sometimes placed in jeopardy. Women who marry without parental approval or engage in premarital sex are said to compromise their family"s honor. They are condemned to death and buried away from their village. 900 women were victims of this alone in 2014. They were described as "tarnished" and "impure" women. A woman shot in the cheek, saba, was attacked by marrying her lover over the objections of her own family, who wanted her to marry her uncle"s brother in law. The day after, her father and uncle showed up to the house she and her husband were living. They led her away saying they wanted to formalize her marriage. In a deserted thicket in the middle of the night, her father and uncle"s attitude changed and they punched and kicked her down. She was held down as her father shot her.
