PSYC-3306EL Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Lithium Chloride, Classical Conditioning, Homeostasis
Document Summary
Animals tend to approach and contact stimuli that signify the availability of food: cs is associated with food. Poison avoidance is important if an animal wants to survive. Neophobia (only seen in animals) is when an animal encounters a new food, they will only consume a small amount; even appetitive sources of food. When a food is found to make an animal sick, they must learn to avoid it. Use test trials where the cs is presented alone. The magnitude of the cr degree of suppression, degree of preference. Probability of responding what percentage of the trials does a cr occur. Latency how fast a cr occurs after the cs is presented: can cause extinction. Familiar stimuli are less easily conditioned than novel stimuli: changes the focus of attention. Latent inhibition occurs due to the cs pre-exposure effect and the us pre-exposure. This phenomenon is and example of how experience has an effect of long term learning.
