Moral reasoning is controlled by external rewards and punishments. Stage 2 - personal reward orientation (individualism and purpose) Abide by standards, but they are the standards of others. Value trust, caring and loyalty to others as basis of moral judgments. Stage 4 - law and order orientation (social systems morality) Moral judgements based on understanding the social order, law, justice and duty. Morality is internalized completely and not based on others" standards. Recognizes alternative moral course, explores the options and decides on a person moral code. Stage 5 - social contract orientation (community rights vs. individual rights) Understands that values and laws are relative and that standards vary from one person to another. Developed a moral standard based on universal human rights.
