PSYC 1115 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Fundamental Attribution Error, Smart People
Document Summary
Bystander effect: a phenomenon where individuals fail to help a victim when others are around; the more people are around; the less likely people are to themselves help. Social psychology: science of the causes and consequences of social behaviour (both good and bad) Humans are ultra-social animals: we live in societies that have a full division of labour, we have people who willingly choose to die for the group. Humans are more ultrasocial: we also form societies with people that we are not genetically related to. Because we are ultrasocial animals, we need to constantly think about other people and what they may think and do. Theory of mind: ability to represent the beliefs and desires of people who are not you. If you have a theory of mind you can: predict what other people will do, explain motives behind their actions, reason about where you agree and disagree with them.
