The ecology of childhood: family, early childhood settings, neighbourhoods and communities, culture. Contexts: people develop in the context of particular times and places. Children are nurtured in many di erent kinds of families, homes, and communities. Think about how each of the following environments will impact the children who live there. Humans are the only animals that can adapt to almost any habitat. The prevalence of child vulnerability by family income. Impact of family: families come in all shapes and sizes. Families di er in terms of composition (number of parents/children, their ages and gender: research supports the idea that families, particularly parents or other primary caregivers, are the most powerful overall in uence on child development. Role of early childhood educator: for families: invite and encourage participation, respect parents" expertise, access resources, reduce barriers to access.
