PSY1075 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Grey Matter, Brainstem, Limbic System
Document Summary
Neuroscience: any or all of the sciences dealing with the structure and function of the nervous system and brain. How have our experiences shaped the structure and function of our brains: stimulation, nurturing, nutrition, experience-expectant processes, experience-dependant processes. Two cerebral hemispheres which are divided into 4 lobes: each lobe has a grey matter (cortex) and white matter. Limbic system: located in the middle and inside of the brain. Cerebral hemispheres: the right and left halves of the brain. Gyrus: a ridged or raised portion of a convoluted brain surface. Sulcus: a furrow of a convoluted brain surface. Cerebral cortex: the outer covering of the cerebral hemispheres. White matter: under the cortex, largely myelinated axons. Gray matter: areas of the brain that are mostly cell bodies and have no myelin. Emotional brain: the limbic system includes several specific structures that are central to a wide array of body functions, thalamus, hypothalamus, hippocampus, amygdala.
