PSYC 230 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Lev Vygotsky, Pragmatics
Document Summary
The second stage of piaget"s theory is called preoperational stage of cognitive development, and it happens from 2 to 6/7 years: symbolic functioning. Children begin to use symbols to describe things, as they"re able to talk, and represent objects with words. As they"re able to use language, they"re able to think in the past, present and future: centration. It is when children focus on one aspect of a situation, neglecting other important features: conservation. It is the knowledge that quantity is unrelated to the arrangement and physical appearance of objects: transformation. It is the process in which one state is changed into another. Ex: transformation in terms of water turning into ice: egocentric thought. The child is focusing on himself/herself all the time. It means that the child believes that he/she is the center of everything. It doesn"t believe that other people have opinions, have time, or want time for themselves.
