Etiology: the factors that contribute to the development of psychopathology. Emil kraepelin: in late 1800s, recognized that patients with psychological disorders didn"t all suffer from the same one. He separated disorders of mood from those of cognition. > diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (dsm): systematic categorization of psychological disorders. Disorders can be grouped based on similar etiologies and symptoms + make how to treat them easier. Intro with instructions of using manual: diagnostic criteria for all disorders, guide for future psychopathology research. Categorical approach: implies a person has a disorder or doesn"t. > dimensional approach: alternative to the categorical approach, consider disorders along a continuum rather than on/off switch. Comorbidity : psychological disorders commonly overlapping, making it dif cult to t patients neatly into a box. People who are depressed are often also anxious. Neuroticism : tendency to experience frequent and intense negative emotions.
