GEOG 272 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Funnel Cloud, Wind Shear, Solar Irradiance
Document Summary
Usually associated with acivity of air masses: large body of air with temperature and moisture content fairly uniform laterally, character inluenced by condiions of source region. Moves slowly or not at all: classiied according to laitude and surface of source regions. Oceans near equator: surface classes [air mass symbol source region] 0. 1: migrates, too irregular to be a source region, seasonal variaion in source region and trajectory, north american air mass source regions and. Front: narrow but well deined 3d boundary between air masses, cold front. Move in front of cold air: warm front. You now have warm air moving into area occupied by cold air, forced to rise over cold air: occluded front. Colder, but against a steeper pressure gradient, moving faster than the warm area: staionary front. Neither air mass can move the other. Temperature + wind direcion diferent on either side.
