Anatomists and health care providers use terminology that can be confusing to non- anatomists: purpose: to increase precision and reduce medical error by eliminating ambiguity. Ex: the hand is located at the distal end of the forearm: lateral= describes the side or direction toward the side of the body. Ex: the little toe is located at the lateral side of the foot: medial= describes the middle or direction toward the middle of the body. Ex: the shoulder blades are located on the posterior side of the body: anterior= nearer to the front also referred to as ventral. A plane is an imaginary 2 dimensional surface that passes through the body. 3 planes: sagittal plane = divides body vertically into right and left sides, frontal plane= divides the body into anterior (front) and posterior (rear) portions, transverse plane= divides the body horizontally into upper and lower portions.
