In our daily lang, those terms sometimes used interchangeably but there are subtle distinctions btwn both. In educ, use assessments to determine if a teacher is being effective and to determine if a learner is acquiring the requisite competencies. Formal - may be conducted using specific tests vs informal - may involve observations, interviews, etc. Goal = gather info about student"s skills, knowledge and abilities. Will likely involve some form of measurement which provides quantitative indicator (ex in class quiz w 25 mc q"s to measure mastery of learning) Measurement = 1 component of a thorough assessment. Good assessment is broader than measurement bc it includes diff samples of a student"s achievement, skills, knowledge and abilities. Formative - often done before or during instruction. When given before instruction, it informs teachers of their students" prior knowledge which will help teachers plan their instructive. When give during, provides ongoing feedback to teachers about the effectiveness of their instruction.
