Document Summary

Chapter 40: basic principles of animal form and function. Animals are incredibly diverse, both in their morphology and physiology, and in the niches that they occupy (how they interact with their ecosystems) In spite of this diversity, animals share many features and often face similar challenges. Natural selection has driven the evolution of animals that are well suited to their environment. Structure and function: structures relate to some function in an organism. Ex: in water, animals have a similar torpedo" shape to help them move through the water. The physical properties of water instill limitations where animals had to evolve similarly to move quickly. Individual species evolved similarly to adjust to a certain envi. Ants are very strong animals (sometimes 50x their weight) But a giant ant would not be able to survive: Size matters ie. bigger ant won"t be able to function.
