Document Summary

The first stage lasts on average from 12-24 hours. During the 1st stage uterine contractions are between 15-20 minutes apart and they last up until a minute. These contractions will come closer together appearing every 2-5 minutes closer to the end of stage 1. By the end of the first stage contractions dilate the cervix to an opening of about 10cm so that the baby can move from the uterus to the birth canal. The second stage begins when the baby"s head starts to move through the cervix and the birth canal. This stage terminates when the baby emerges from the mother"s body. Afterbirth is the third and final stage and this is when the placenta, umbilical cord, and other membranes get detached and expelled. Being born involves significant stress for the baby as well. During contractions oxygen to the fetus is decreased. Large dosages of hormones are produced to help the fetus to handle this stress.
