As biological entities, races do not exist. Race is the product of socio-historical (not scientific) processes. Racialization the process in which ppl are viewed as essentially diff terms of their intellect, their morality, values, and worth because of differences of physical type or cultural heritage. 18th c. e euro science was particularly concerned with typologies. Classification systems based on systematic org into types on the basis of shared attributes. Carl linnaeus or cal von line (father of taxonomy) made 4 kinds of human species. These became the biological basis for corresponding moral/personality types. Became popular b/c they fit with the political, eco climate of the time, not b/c they were scientifically true. 1850: race was considered a valid scientific category for physically distinguishing human sub groups. Main idea: there was a division based on natural kinds of human beings called races. Explain the existence oh human diversity euro colonizers encountered.
