SOCI 1002 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Conflict Theories, Labeling Theory, Physiognomy
Document Summary
Deviance is not necessarily criminal, but criminal is often deviant. Crime is often deviance that can be codified. Ex: hockey hits could be defined as assault but they are not criminal nor deviant. Age, race, ethnicity, culture, time, gender all play a role in deviance. Ex: domestic abuse was not a big issue in the past and is now severely enforced. Deviance is something everyone engages in to varying degrees. Categorize people from their physical appearance and attach certain character traits to physical appearance. Absolutist: something that is inherently and naturally bad. Statistical: deviance is something that does not occur often. Something about the individual is making them deviant. Deviance is defined by social rules, which are made by people. This helps us decide what is ok and what isn"t. People in power have the ability to sway the definition of deviance. Religious organisations have strong influence in deciding what is normal and what is deviant.
