State: organized political structure, which has slowly evolved in complex societies as their population & territory, increased in scale & scope. The state was created to handle warfare, trade, and most importantly to handle. The key function of the state, which often goes unnoticed, is its role in class relations within capitalist societies as conflict and inequality grew. maintaining a dominant social order. Max weber the modern state has a monopoly on the legitimate use of violence : monopoly over the legitimate use of physical coercion, force and violence. Pluralist state theory: the most important function of the state is mediation. Societies should be complex and comprised of multiple classes. Pluralist argue that the state is a neutral third party. Important for the state to promote economic growth: mediator function , therefore balancing the needs and interests of all groups. The state and the government are interchangeable.
