Intellectual disability: formerly mental retardation , essential features are: Deicits in general mental abilities and impairment in everyday adaptive functioning, in comparison to an individual"s age-, gender-, and sociocultural matched peers. Now, severity is determined by adaptive functioning rather than iq score. Communication disorders: language disorder (previously mixed receptive-expressive language disorder, persistent diiculties in the acquisition/use of language across modalities (spoken, written, sign), due to deicits in comprehension or production that include the following: Deicits in using communication for social purposes (e. g. greeting and sharing information in a manner that is appropriate for the social context) Impairment of the ability to change communication to match context or the needs of the listener (e. g. speaking diferently in a classroom vs. a playground, talking diferently to a child vs. an adult) Diiculty following the rules for conversation or storytelling (e. g. taking turns, rephrasing when misunderstood, knowing how to use verbal and non-verbal signs to regulate interaction)
