Document Summary

We will focus on basic processes in reading: visual processing, visual word recognition, visual processing. Getting words into the system involves translation of written symbols into meaning. Series of (fixations) and jumps (saccades): fixations ~ 200-250 ms (80% of content words), good readers only focus on content words words that have meaning to them. Less on the, and, a, etc : saccades ~ 20-40 ms (7-9 letter jumps). Why series of fixations and saccades: visual acuity best at foveated area, fovea is where all the rods and cones are, where we can gather details. Two assumptions: immediacy, reader attempts to interpret each (content) word as it is fixated, so we don"t build up words and then revisit them and try to figure them out. We process as we encounter: eye-mind, eye will remain fixated on a word long as the word is being processed.
