Lecture 7: retrieval from sts, sternberg (1969) scanning task. Task: memory search (scanning): 9 4 1 6 3 8, pause (2 sec), probe (3) A stimulus set with one to six numbers. You"d see it briefly, followed by a brief pause, and then a probe number comes up. Question: does the probe number match anything in the memory cell? (the numbers are the memory cell). Sometimes probe would match, sometimes it wouldn"t: yes/no response (dependent variable is rt). Errors are pretty uncommon, so they"re not the dependent variable. How to model: assume: time between a probe stimulus and a response is occupied by a series of discrete stages, this is a big assumption. They are discrete stages the next stage can"t happen until the one before is finished. Three hypotheses regarding search in sts: parallel. So you compare the probe to all items in the memory set. No matter the amount in memory set, it"s always parallel doesn"t vary.
