Mechanisms and adaptions developed then continue to exist as long as they are not disadvantageous to survival or reproduction. Parental investment theory holds that the sex investing more to offspring will be choosier in a mate (as they have a limited number of offspring). That being said, the sex that invests the least can produce more offspring. Therefore, they can potentially copulate with many partner, this makes sense as men desire more partners than do woman. The difference in access to mates of haves and have not"s leads to ferocious intrasexual competition. Males will fight amongst each other for access to resources and those low in the order are motivated to take big risks to achieve resources.
