The problem in personality assessment is the matter of how we can measure abstract, unobservable, complex patterns or characteristics such as traits. Intelligence for example; iq testing; there"s a lot of criticism for the iq testing the main being the fact that there is more than one aspect of intelligence. Another being that iq tests are derived around first world culture and can be biased when testing other cultures (other cultures may not know some of the concepts necessary to answer questions) The average lay person would use their own observation and contact with an individual to figure out what their personality is like. When assessing personality traits; think of grouping opposite traits together and using a normal curve to apply information (i. e. emotional stability vs. neuroticism). Extremities are those areas in which someone can be said to be straight forward neurotic or stable. Extremities, as shown on the normal curve, are those areas that are least common.
