Psyc 2301 heart disease, hypertension, stroke, and diabetes. Accounts for more than 1 out of every 5 deaths in canada: 20% male; 22% female, often premature (i. e, before age of 75) Only became leading cause of death in 20th century: earlier ppl died of infectious disease, so many ppl didn"t live long enough to develop heart disease, due to lifestyle changes. General term referring to illnesses caused by atherosclerosis, narrowing of coronary arteries vessels that supply heart w/ blood. Temporary shortages of oxygen & substrate (nutrients) cause pain aka angina pectoris which radiates from across chest & arm. Inflammatory processes: inflammation in body causes liver to release c-reactive protein into bloodstream, b/c inflammation damages arterial walls, c-reactive = prognostic sign that damage may be occurring. High blood pressure, diabetes, stress, depression, genetic predisposition, low ses. Harsh early family environment, cig smoking, obesity, anger/hostility. Level of control in daily life, job stress, ptsd, high serum cholesterol level.
