PSCI 2002 Lecture 10: Week 10
Document Summary
Chapter 12 political socialization, the mass media, and public opinion polls: political socialization. Political socialization: the process by which we acquire the basic values, attitudes, orientations, beliefs, and information that make up the political culture, which was examined last week. Political socialization can also be seen as the process through which society passes on its basic values, attitudes, and orientations to the younger generation and other newcomers. Any direct, personal observation of political phenomena is supplemented by agents of political socialization. Agents of political socialization: family: people get some of their basic political values, attitudes, orientations and beliefs in the family setting. It is hard to generalize because every family is different. Some children grow up in a very apathetic family where politics is never mentioned, whereas other children have ultra-political parents. Think about your own: school: a more general influence because it is usually a public institution. The school deliberately tries to influence childrens" values to some extent.
