Introduction to IR and Comparative Politics
What is politics?
Politics: public vs. private
• Private sphere- economy, society.
• Public Sphere- how to make decisions for the public good & what is
the public good.
Politics as the common good
Collective security (how is it that we decide our public safety?), public safety
(law & order), questions related to citizenship (what rights do we possess as
citizens)
Deliberation
(how do we allow citizens to make legislation?)
A state is a monopoly on how to exercise force and power
Politics as authoritative decision making
The infrastructure of making decisions
The sanctions that would be levied by someone who doesn’t follow the rules
