Language and the brain" lecture is being dropped. New content on the inal: linguisic diversity, language and culture, language endangerment, language, poetry, music. Some quesions will be strictly out of the readings. Not on the inal: language and law; grammar of swear words. A representaion of the meter: the metrical template. The linguisic representaion also has weak and strong beats (stressed and unstressed syllables) In the perfect lines, there is a complete match between w and unstressed syllables, and between s and stressed syllables. Most lines are not perfect in this sense. What kinds of syllables can occupy s and w for a line to be acceptable as iambic pentameter: complexiies. Some (simplifying) assumpions: iniial stress: w ter, s lly, b ther, final stress: can e, ata n, pref r, open-class 1-syllable words are stressed: l ck, g y, st nd, closed-class words are (usually) unstressed: the, her, is.
