Today we will look at whether foreign aid can be viewed as a mode of development of poorer countries or is it about perpetuating a cycle of dependency thereby paving way for neo-colonialism. The common view of foreign aid is generally positive. The assumption is that we as citizens of a more powerful and wealthier nation should be able to extend support to impoverished nations of the world. Aid activities are often viewed from the perspective of dependency theory. Dependency theory is the notion that resources flow from the periphery to the core. The periphery represents the so-called poor and underdeveloped states and the core represents the wealthy states. The rationale behind this theory is that the arrangement enriches the latter at the expense of the former.
