Rules of behaviour learned for given social context. Negaive sancions penalies imposed for violaion of norms. Posiive sancions encouragements that reward conformity. We have learned that it is right no we just do it. No one has to say the acion is criminal or not you just do it. Not enforced by formally designated persons but by e. g. ridicule, gossip, praise or other rewards, ostracism. Modern technologies (cyberbullying, libel in the internet age) Negaive afect on day to day living, gossip, ostracized, not as diverse socieies. Slander- damage reputaion by saying something about someone. Libel - unfounded informaion, not this if it"s true, writen form. May include: criminal laws, medicalizaion of deviance. Penalizes non conformity , not rewarded for conforming. Legalizaion: process by which norms are moved from social to legal level. Purposes of punishment in law: retribuion, incapacitaion, individual or general deterrence, rehabilitaion. Retribuion idea that prison evens the score for the crime.
