To offer a conceptual map of the evolution of law. Functions essentially the same: coordinate interactions, settle disputes, check deviance, regularize exchanges. Now its more about individuals on their own. Reflected by increase social complexity: private and public laws become distinct, criminal versus torts laws also becomes distinct. Practice of common law provokes greater codification and systematization of laws. From serving the elite, more general and engulfing in scope. Specialized legal professional, and a visible degree of political and national unity (e. g nation state) Property as conflict exam question: identify central teases, conflict increasingly specialized in legal profession- lawyers specialized taking your problem away from you and making money with it.
