Propaganda amps up in time of war & election time. Propaganda = not truth, journalists need to help their readers identify it. Propaganda: form of communication that attempts to achieve a response and furthers the intent of the propagandist (not meant to benefit the person seeing the propaganda) Persuasion: more interactive and wants to satisfy the needs of the persuader and the persuade. We can influence events, we can intervene and redirect people and inform them. Art of mass persuasion = embedded in contemporary society. Comes from latin: to propagate , to sow . 1st use of the term = vatican in 1600s. Sacra congregation for propagating the faith of the roman catholic church. The term has now come to have a negative meaning. *economic action plan = criticized as a piece of propaganda (motive = create point of view)
