Over the course of the 20th century, newspapers started to add specific sections to attract more advertisers, content that could be married to advertising interests proliferated. With the exception of the cbc, etc. all media is geared towards consumers, some audience members are more valuable and more sought out than others, people with more disposable income. Cheaper for newspapers to buy syndicated columns than to hire someone to write it. Classified ads were where people looked to buy or sell things, people posted classified ads in newspapers bc it was cheap, couldn"t do that on television. By the 20th century, the newspaper was an artifact, the amount of the actual news was dwarfed by the amount of advertisements and syndicated content. Newspaper sought to sell itself every day, as soon as you had read the newspaper it was useless, though it had unintended auxiliary uses.
