Drums and wires: telegraph communication and radio broadcasting. The way we communicate is shaped by the technologies we have to do so. Telegraph helped to set the architecture of contemporary communication, we need to understand the underpinnings of contemporary technology. Can communicate through ether by drum beat, anyone can hear you bc you"re communicating en masse, anyone who can tune in can hear you, trying to reach as many people as possible at the same time. Or can communicate down a wire, communicating from one point to another, point to point communication. To this day, communication over distance uses at least one of these methods, usually both. Both and neither, bc it isn"t communicating to an individual, but it isn"t indiscriminate; sent to a network, but the network is self- selected; people have chosen to follow you, to see your tweets.
