Miners in taung found child"s skull from 2. 5 million years ago. 25 000 years ago > later stone age, evidence of hunting with bows and arrows. Found that people on the cape also ate seafood. Also referred to as bushmen > derogatory. Bantu later arrived from niger/cameroon of 1000 years. San language consists of clicks, very different from other african languages. Best model for lifestyle of later stone age. Also recorded history with rock paintings and engravings, in every district of south africa. Estimated to be 20-30 000 rock painting sites, over a million individual images. Also had religious art, showed role of shamans, trance dance images (used trance to find game) Created some of the art believed to be made by san. May have originally been hunter-gatherers and found livestock, may also have brought livestock from east africa. Developed symbiotic relationship, converted some san to herding.
