A dark film noir melodrama about the relationship between two men and the impossible love-hate relationship between a man and a woman. A dark m nage- -trois where it is not easy to know who loves whom or when hate is love and love is hate. The films opens with a reference to bertolt brecht"s famous play the threepenny opera (1928) and the main character mack the knife (macheath). Macready) is compared to mack the knife with his concealed knife in his cane. Brecht"s song about mack the knife we find the lyrics: The film is told as a long flashback, and johnny (glenn ford) is the narrator in voice- In gilda, mundson points out that his real friend is his knife. Friendship for him is obedience and submission. over. Two story-times, the one we see unfolding and the one that the voice-over represents telling the story from a point after even the ending.
