Godard undermines classical hollywood devices (ex: continuity editing) to expose the strategies used to hide the constuctedness of narrative films. Films like godard"s, and those of many younger filmmakers have influence, are self- reflexive because they reflect on the techniques that they use to construct their own narratives. Unlike classical films that want to make their techniques invisible, those post-classical films (films that came after the french new wave) expose their techniques. Goal = make techniques obvious and encourage the spectator to think about what"s going on and how the plot is constructed (thanks to godard) Unlike classical films that limit itself to answering questions will they make it to the beach . A realist film would explore questions like what are their lives like . Instead it asks: how does this film tell its story and how does this narrative perspective influence my perception of the characters. Film uses a number of self-reflexive devices to question narrative.
