Lecture notes - week 8 participation is the action of becoming involved in something taking part in an activity. Participation is both about inclusion and communication. Gadgets make things possible and not possible. What something can do or make possible. Use participation to think about affordances of media. Questions of practice relationship of communication and practice. How you do something says something about values of the culture, group, organization ext of which that practice is taking place. How and way we participate says something about us and the values we hold. Participation we do it because we believe it creates meaning. Doing something will have some sort of effect. New media encourage and discourage certain kinda of participation. Co-opted by those with [power leave people out of the community. Emergence of disability studies design of new technology don"t keep in mine the variety of different people. Two models of citizenship: common to think about participation in terms of citizenship.
