The daguerrotype, invented by louis daguerre 1839. Early form of photos, and captured by silver plates. George eastman develops roll film and inexpensive, easy to use cameras (founder of kodak) The photographical index: semiotics and signs (study of signs) how do we use some things to stand in for other things (signs) represents things, three kinds of relationship between signifier and signified : Icon (signifier looks like signified) ex. picture of a tree thats not very well drawn but you still know its a tree. Index (signifier factually connected to signified) ex. smoke and fire something is burning when you see smoke. Symbol (signifier conventionally associated with signified: figurative drawings are icons, but photographs are both iconic and indexical, seeing is believing . Longer, narrative films required new language of editing.
