Lecture 22: cognitive science and "the real world" What makes a field of study important: one response: a field of study is imp to the extent that it helps make the world a better place, part of that is reducing the world"s problems. Solving problems vs innovative ways to make things better. Expert systems research: computer sstems meant to reproduce the performance of experts in particular domains. Some imp features of expertise: reaching a high degree of proficiency in some specialized domain. Increased automatization of some aspects of performance that serves to ffree up attention for other aspects: always aiming to improve by way of deliberate practice. Dreyfus & dreyfus (1986) fie stages of acquiring expertise. First stage of acquiring a new skill by instruction. Stage 2: advanced beginner: the learners gets practical experience with concrete situations that cannot be defined in avance in a context-free way.
