BIOL 3202 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Asgard, Gtpase, Cell Membrane
Document Summary
Essential concepts: the nucleus is the most prominent organelle in eukaryotic cells. Pm surrounding the nuclear material have the potential form a double membrane structure resembling a primitive nuclear envelope and associated er membranes. Eventually, this system of membranes became completely separate from the pm giving rise to the nucleus: this is not so far-fetched. Planctomyces are a group of bacteria that are capable of endocytosis. Some members of this group also enclose their genetic material in a double membrane. This suggests a close relationship between endocytosis and the existence of internal membrane-boundary compartments: similarly, the genome of asgaard archaea encodes vesicle coat proteins and other machinery that suggests cells are mobile and capable of endocytosis. The parts of chromosomes that encode for rrnas cluster together to form the nucleolus when they are actively being transcribed and subsequently processed and assembled into the large and small subunits of ribosomes.
