BIOL 1902 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Gulf Stream, Rain Shadow, Ecosystem Services
Document Summary
A scientific study of the interactions that determines the distribution and abundance of organisms. Ecologists don"t necessarily speak out for all of the environmental activists: they might have access to the information that people use as activism tools. They study interactions among organisms, between organisms and their environment and their special temporal distribution. They study this through abiotic factors and biotic factors. They also study how abiotic factors affect / interact with biotic factors (and visa versa). Study populations (of only the one species) and population demography (ie birth / death rates, migration patterns etc) Landscape (large area of land that includes multiple ecosystems) Ecology as a science can help decision making: applied ecology. Ecologists have information on how the ecosystems, landscapes and biospheres interact with each other and with people. People value their opinion when it comes to agriculture, management of infection diseases, ecosystem services and conservation of biodiversity.
