BIOL 1902 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Quorum Sensing, Plasmid, Antibiotics
Document Summary
What defines them is their lack of a true nucleus. You can"t find actual fossils of them but you can track traces of their presence (either chemical analysis or through modification of the environment) The oldest trace are stromatolites ~ 3500 billion years ago. They can form in 3 shapes: cocci, bacilli and spirochete: cocci little balls all formed together, bacilli little fat rods, spirochete long skinny snake like things. The membrane around in between the cell walls and the actual cell is the flimbrane. The peptidoglycan allows water to come into the cell without the cell exploding. Gram-positive bacteria turn purple and any other (gram-negative turn other colors) Lps fight the deadly toxins that may enter the body they are endotoxins and are only found in gram-negative bacteria cells. Lps activate when the body goes into septic shock. Bacteria cannot tap into water without a way of dealing with the oxygen because oxygen is highly toxic for the bacteria.
