Document Summary

The land plants have an aquatic ancestor which colonized ~ ____ million years ago. Land plants have 2 generations of multicellular organisms: gametophyte (the structure that produces the gametes by mitosis. They are haploid), sporophyte (produce spores, they are diploids because they were produced by fertilization. They can germinate and produce to start the process over again). The spores the produce are very protected with their cell wall which is made of sporopollenin (< name not important). Their apical meristem is useful if the plant is not near a water source which can grow towards the closest source of light, water and/or nutrients. Land plants have a waxy cuticle which prevents water to come out even when there is not a good water source. The problem with this is that it also does not let in or out gases so they have their stomata"s which can open and lose to let in and release the gasses when needed.
