3 important qualities of a scientific theory: must explain past or present observations, must explain better than other theories, must be able to predict the future. Evolutionary biology ie: paleontology, genetics, ecology, developmental biology, mathematics and stats, experimental biology. Evolution is the theory of change over time. Darwin did not come up with the theory of evolution! Buffon and lamark were behind the early idea of evolution in the 17-1800"s. Buffon: started to search out ideas other than evolution and challenge the belief that the world started in genesis (as the bible says it does) Lamark: first to propose how life changes over time and the inheritance of acquired characteristics and suggested that simple organisms are produced by spontaneous generations into more complex ones. A lot of important naturalists were a part of the clergy (the church) William paley: made observations based on what was true to what the bible said.
