BIOL 1902 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Nostril, Turkey Vulture, Libido
Document Summary
Flat flies are one group: they tend to have mouth parts or claws that hang onto the host. The haller"s organ is an adaptation ticks have for finding a host. Ticks have a mouthpart called the hypostome for penetrating and holding onto a host: palps are what draw the blood. Many ectoparasites have an anticoagulant to allow the blood to continue to flow. Black flies and mosquitoes are not ectoparasites. Blue herons have a special grooming claw (pectinate toe: but only on the middle toe and on the inside of the toe. Beavers also have it too: the two inner most toes on the hind feet have a double or split toenail, thought to be for removing ectoparasites. Some parasites live inside their host: endoparasites: ex. They die because moose and deer evolved separately. Endoparasites have adaptations: most endoparasites are very small, parasitic castration (changes behavior to have no sex drive)
