1763: the royal society of london publishes an article by the rev. Edward stone, account of the success of the bark of the willow in the cure of agues . 1853:in 1853, gerhardt neutralized salicylic acid by bu ering it with sodium (sodium salicylate) and acetyl chloride and added acetic acid, thus creating acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin). Acetylsalicylic acid is a better pain reliever than salicylic acid, also less irritating to the stomach. 1890: german chemist felix ho mann working for the company bayer rediscovered. Opium poppy contains over 40 opium alkaloids, including morphine (up to 20%), narcotine (about 5%), codeine (about 1%), and papaverine (about 1%). Heroine (diacetylmorphine or diamorphine) is more addictive and potent (twice) than morphine because it crosses the blood-brain barrier more quickly. Activation of heroine in the brain: (by enzyme esterase) #opioid antagonists (made using nitrogen substituents) are used to treat heroin and morphine overdose.
